Men Painting Women Art Exhibition

Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA) is proud to present a group exhibition that explores how male painters portray women in their artwork. This exhibition is curated by artist Robert Shirk and features his own pieces along with other award-winning artists including Herbie Martin, Leonardo Montoya, Wilson Romero and Weldon Ryan.

A touring exhibition featuring the works of five award winning artists. Despite their unified focus on the female form, each work of art offers a unique approach to the subject matter that results in a vibrant and nuanced presentation. Each artist’s offering remains independently captivating while also working to effortlessly communicate a collective appreciation for the strength and dynamism of the feminine.

The opening reception takes place on Friday, January 6, 2023, during Old Town Untapped, from 6 pm-10 pm.

The exhibition will be located in the East and Central Galleries at BaCA, an artist talk will be announced shortly.

Featured Artists:

• Herbie Martin (Orlando)

Martin's work is in acrylic paint, sometimes over a photograph and is vibrantly colored with a fantastical element to the images. He begins by applying body paint on live models, then photographing them, then he creates his final vision with paint.

• Leonardo Montoya Pérez (Fort Lauderdale)

Montoya, also currently an artist in residence at BaCA, likes to portray real people as they are, and prizes authenticity. His paintings are bold with neon colors, stylized images and recognizable public figures.

• Wilson Romero (Orlando)

Romero creates otherworldly images that recall fairy tales, fables and the divine.

• Weldon Ryan (Palm Coast)

Ryan paints Caribbean women in carnival costumes, which originated from Trinidad and Tobago. His work is filled with rich and exuberant colors, and beautifully expressive faces.

• Robert Shirk (Ormond Beach)

Shirk uses an unusual technique of dots on layered pieces of plexiglass, which allows the paintings to appear to move as the viewer moves.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Tuesdays through Fridays: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm | Saturdays: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
