Two Dreamers. One Ridiculous Musical. Endless Laughs.
At the heart of Gutenberg! The Musical! are two enthusiastic writers with one enormous dream: to bring their original musical to Broadway. There's just one small problem. Their historical research is hilariously inaccurate, their story is completely absurd, and their understanding of Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press leaves plenty to be desired.
Armed with boundless optimism and an unforgettable collection of songs, the duo sets out to convince potential producers that their musical deserves the spotlight. Along the way, audiences are treated to a whirlwind of outrageous characters, unexpected plot twists, and laugh-out-loud moments.
Part affectionate parody, part love letter to Broadway, Gutenberg! celebrates the passion and determination of artists who dare to dream big—even when their ideas are delightfully ridiculous.
Broadway Acclaim Meets Offbeat Comedy
Gutenberg! The Musical! has earned an impressive collection of theatrical accolades, including a 2024 Tony Award nomination for Best Revival of a Musical, along with recognition from the Drama Desk, Drama League, Lucille Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Critics have embraced its unconventional humor and theatrical ingenuity.
New York Magazine called it "Brilliantly realized and side-splitting!" while The New York Times declared it "A smashing success!" New York Stage Review described the production as "a master class in musical comedy."
With its witty writing, infectious energy, and playful approach to storytelling, it's easy to see why this unconventional musical has captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike.
A Broadway Tradition with Star Power
Here's a fun fact that makes Gutenberg! even more memorable: During its Broadway run, performances featured surprise celebrity appearances, with famous guests emerging from the audience wearing a yellow trucker hat!
The impressive roster included Steve Martin, Billy Crystal, Patti LuPone, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hillary Clinton, and "Weird Al" Yankovic. These unexpected cameos became a beloved Broadway tradition, adding another layer of fun to an already unpredictable show.
