Let’s Celebrate Black History Month in Pompano Beach

This February, the City of Pompano Beach invites residents and visitors alike to honor Black History Month with a vibrant lineup of events celebrating art, music, storytelling, and community. Through meaningful partnerships with local artists, cultural organizations, and community groups—including the beloved Tiger Trail Festival—Pompano Beach is proud to showcase the richness of African American history and its enduring, influential legacy.

Powerful Stories on Stage

The celebration begins with Brévo Theatre’s Freshly Rooted – New Works Series, spotlighting acclaimed playwright Bryan Keyth Wilson. Known for his bold, unapologetic voice and dedication to expanding Black narratives in theater, Wilson brings a compelling collection of fully staged productions and new play readings to South Florida. Audiences can experience impactful works such as FOR COLORED BOYZ and LUV NO LIMIT, which explore identity, vulnerability, and truth through powerful storytelling.

Art as Healing and Renewal

Visual art takes center stage with BaCA Artist in Residence Jed Lee Metayer and his exhibition Uzumaki. Through luminous spiral forms, Metayer transforms personal grief over the loss of his father into an expression of spiritual renewal. Drawing inspiration from Japanese aesthetics and Taoist philosophy, the paintings meditate on impermanence and rebirth—where the spiral becomes both a wound and a halo.

Expanding Musical Horizons

Music lovers can journey beyond the familiar with the Present… In Place, Space and Time Music Series. This unique concert experience features rare instruments such as the Kurdish baglama and kalimba, paired with violins and horns to create fascinating cross-cultural duets that expand musical boundaries and spark curiosity.

Honoring a Musical Legacy

Black musical heritage remains a cornerstone of the month’s celebration. Highlights include Ladies of Simone at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, a moving tribute to the life and legacy of Nina Simone, performed by four phenomenal vocalists revisiting her most influential songs.

Back by popular demand, renowned singer and musician Nicole Yarling returns with her beloved Jazz Reflections concert. Yarling will also bring the next generation of jazz talent to the Pompano Beach Green Market with a lively set of jazz standards, followed by a student-led community jazz jam. We will be Groovin’ on a Saturday Morning.

Gospel enthusiasts can look forward to the uplifting An Evening of Gospel at the Ali Cultural Center, featuring multiple choirs in a powerful evening of praise and inspiration.

Food, Community, and Celebration

The intersection of culinary arts and community support shines at the Exquisite Food and Wine Festival. Guests can enjoy tastings from talented Black chefs and mixologists alongside live performances, with proceeds benefiting the Empowering Black Creatives Scholarship Fund.

Community celebration continues with the Tiger Trail Street Festival, a joyful neighborhood gathering featuring a parade, kids’ activities, music, and more—bringing people together in the spirit of unity and pride.

Stories That Spark Reflection

For those seeking deeper reflection, The Porch Talk—written by Sharonda “Eccentrich” Richardson and directed by Curtis Smith—offers a heartfelt exploration of family heritage, memory, and community through a generational lens.
