Lakou La Croix

May 08 - Jun 13

A solo exhibition presenting a collection of artworks by Louiveste La Croix that explore childhood memory, displacement, and communal identity. This body of work reflects the artist’s early life in Saint Louis du Nord, Haiti, and the emotional transitions of moving between multiple households before immigrating to South Florida.

The concept of lakou, a communal living structure rooted in Haitian culture, serves as both a physical and symbolic framework throughout the exhibition. For the artist, lakou represents a way of living shaped by shared responsibility, adaptability, and survival. Growing up, this communal arrangement existed across many places, as Louiveste lived with various relatives away from his parents due to the prolonged immigration process. Each home became a temporary doorway, shaping his sense of belonging and identity.

Lakou La Croix is a constellation of memories that form a complex portrait of self. Through mixed media, symbolism, and layered narratives, the exhibition examines how culture, spirituality, consciousness, community, and expression intersect to shape identity. Each artwork acts as a doorway, inviting viewers to move through personal history, collective memory, and the evolving meaning of home.
