Florida Emancipation Day, observed on May 20, marks when enslaved people in Florida were declared free in 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it wasn’t enforced in Florida until Union troops arrived and announced freedom in Tallahassee. It commemorates the end of slavery in the state and honors African American history.
Today, Florida Emancipation Day is observed to:
- Honor the end of slavery in the state
- Recognize African American history and resilience
- Celebrate freedom through community events, education, and cultural programs
Hued Songs invites the community to gather for a vibrant block party rooted in freedom, creativity and Black joy, celebrating Florida's Emancipation Day at the Ali Cultural Arts Center.
