Artist: Andrew Hayes
Location: Blanche Ely High School
A tiger goes by many names, embodies many traits and all the while the majesty of this creature is appreciated and recognized by all. When creating this mural artist Andrew Hayes was struck with the idea of community and how a solitary animal could mean so much to the community at large. In Hayes’ early interviews with students, parents, employees, and alumni and throughout the process one sentiment was clear and ever present, an unshakeable pride and inherited will carried by all who call Blanche Ely High School home. For that reason, Hayes let the students take the wheel and control the course of action allowing me to serve as a curator of their community message. Ironically, his question to the students became the title for this piece and the mural a visual answer. It is Hayes honor to share his hand in being the mirror for a community that serendipitously shares his own motto of freedom within artwork as an anagram in its name, BE. This mural is a testament to the authenticity of both the students and alumni. It is Hayes’ belief that people live happier and more fulfilled lives when they are free to be themselves and for that reason they should be just that, themselves. As you gaze upon this mural it is Hayes’ hope, to capture the spirit of its composers and transitively the founder and first principal, Mrs. Blanche Ely. And as always Be Bold, Be Creative, Be You.
In order to complete this project. The City partnered with the Broward County School Board and Blanche Ely High School. Artist Andrew Hayes was commissioned to work with the students at Blanche Ely High School to design and install a mural celebrating the students and Coach Melvin Randal.
